About Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC)

While the brain is protected by the skull, the spinal cord is more vulnerable. All nerves from the brain travel down through these vertebrae, branching off and passing through openings along the spine to get to their destinations. Stress, trauma or chemical imbalances can cause vertebrae to loose their normal positions or motion and irritate the nervous system. This disrupts the functions of the tissues or organs that these nerves control. This is called the Vertebral Subluxation Complex.

Symptoms of VSC

  1. Abnormal movement of spinal vertebrae
  2. Nerve irritation
  3. Abnormal muscle function (spasm, weakness or wasting)
  4. Swelling, inflammation and soft tissue damage
  5. Arthritis, spinal decay and scar tissue formation

Dr. Powell is primarily interested in detecting, reducing and preventing the Vertebral Subluxation Complex, and Wellness Maintenance Care.

Dr. Powell uses spinal "adjustments" to remove the subluxation. This involves using carefully directed and controlled pressure to restore spinal bones to more normal position and motion, often relieving pain. When spinal function is improved, nervous system function (health) will improve.

Levels of Care

There are 3 levels of care. Active Intensive, Rehabilitation and Maintenance, as shown in the diagram and explained further below:

Phases of Degeneration

When areas of the spine experience trauma or injury, the body attempts to immobilize the malfunctioning joints with abnormal bony growth. Without chiropractic care, the joint surfaces become rough and uneven. If this condition is left uncorrected, these spinal bones may eventually fuse together. If caught early, the process can be slowed, stopped or even reversed with appropriate chiropractic care.

"Chiropractic is a vital, impressively safe and clinically effective form of health care. It is scientifically based and uses the existing body of medical and scientific knowledge."

"Chiropractors have, beyond reasonable doubt, a more thorough training in spinal mechanics and spinal manual therapy than any other health profession." 1

"Chiropractic patients treated for low back pain enjoy better long-term benefit in comparison to hospital outpatient management".2

"Workers compensation studies have shown that chiropractic patients: get well four times faster, and at a quarter of the cost of medically treated patients". 3 Furthermore, chiropractic compensation costs for work time lost are a fraction of the standard medical treatment. 4
